For Amber, though, the moment she committed to spend the rest of her life with the man of her dreams was the most important event of the day—not the décor or the specifics. Amber was overcome with thanks for the trip that had gotten her to this point as she danced beneath glittering lights.

Everything seemed right that night when they got to their new house and started their marriage. Amber excused herself to change, ready to enter this new phase. She heard something unusual as she got back to the bedroom though.

Steve Had Been Hiding Secrets

Steve was speaking gently, with emotional resonance. He was not, however, carrying a phone or engaging in conversation with anybody Amber observed. He was speaking to himself—or so it appeared. Amber stopped at the entrance, her interest aroused. She tried to hear his words and identified the name “Stacey.”

Not sure but worried, she entered the room and softly said, “Who are you talking to?”

Steve stopped; tears sprung to his eyes. His voice trembled as he acknowledged the truth: he had been talking to his late daughter Stacey, who had died in an automobile accident years earlier. At the time, Stacey had been a small child, and her death had left Steve with a wound in his heart that never quite healed.

Steve broke in his speech to say, “I still feel her presence.” Particularly at times like this—important events. I was mentioning you to her, about us. She ought to know, I thought.

Amber felt her heart hurt for Steve as he shared the depth of his loss. Fearing it might scare her away or cause her to doubt their future, he said he had kept this side of his life secret. “I didn’t want to load you with my suffering,” he continued. “I reasoned it might be too much.”

For Amber, though, it was not overly excessive. It was a doorway into Steve’s soul, a monument to his suffering and the depth of his love.

Love, Recovery, and Forward Movement

Instead of feeling overwhelmed, Amber saw her love for Steve deepening in that instant. “You don’t have to go through this alone,” she murmured as she grabbed for his hand. We will get through it together. She advised them to go to therapy together, not just to help Steve deal with his loss but also to deepen their relationship as they traveled on in their lives together.

Steve consented, and the two started showing up for meetings where Steve could freely discuss his Stacey recollections. Amber grew even more in value of the man she had married during these sessions. She observed his strength, sensitivity, and unflinching love even through great suffering.

Amber discovered that love goes beyond simply marking the happy events. It’s about supporting someone in healing, honoring their past, and being by their side through their challenges. Loving Steve meant embracing him exactly—scars, suffering, and everything. For Amber, that made their love much more significant.

Therapy helped Steve achieve serenity over time, and together Steve and Amber created a life rich in love, understanding, and mutual support. Often thinking back on that BBQ, Amber was appreciative of the day Steve entered her life.
