Elton John has opened up about the ramifications of a recent infection he suffered from, painting a bleak picture concerning his overall health.

The 77-year-old has been in an out of headlines this year having experienced a number of issues relating to illness and the like, but it was a serious eye infection, diagnosed earlier this year, that the music legend attributed to halting his career.

“It’s been a while since I’ve done anything, and well, I just have to get off my backside,” he said, as per the Daily Mirror.

“I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the south of France and it’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see, and my left eye is not the greatest.

“So there’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but it’s… I’m kind of stuck at the moment, because I can do something like this (an interview), but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for a start.”

Back in September, Elton revealed in an Instagram statement that he was “healing” following the aforementioned infection, but his recovery has since slowed.

He said at the time: “It’s never fortunate for anything like this to happen, and it kind of floored me. And I can’t see anything, I can’t read anything, can’t watch anything.”

The singer’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour came to a close on July 8, 2023 in Stockholm Sweden, marking the end of his career on the road. Prior to his final tour, he revealed his plan to spend more time with his family and focus on his well being.

In October, rumors insisted that Elton is attempting to conceal the truth concerning his health, stating that the superstar refuses to be “seen as weak” in the wake of a the Rocket Man singer using a custom-made cart to cruise down the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival.

“Elton refuses to be seen as weak. He’s so determined to maintain his larger-than-life image, but the truth is he can hardly move without help,” a source told Radar Online. “He doesn’t know where he’s going half the time.

“That’s why the golf cart makes sense, it’s a way to hide the truth from the cameras. Elton’s focus now is all about cementing his legacy. He wants to control the narrative of his life as an artist, husband and father, before someone else does it for him!”
