Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, and the first to be worth over $700 billion after his Tesla pay package was approved on Friday, disbursed $474 million to charities in 2024.

But, as was the case in 2023, the vast majority of his grants were doled out to entities he controls, according to the Musk Foundation’s latest tax filing, released Monday. And he’s still falling short of the yearly 5% minimum the IRS legally requires his foundation to give away.

The largest recipient this year was The Foundation, a nonprofit created by Musk in 2021 to build and manage a STEM-focused K-12 school and, eventually, a university in Austin, Texas. The foundation’s tax document shows Musk more than doubled last year’s donation, giving $370 million to “support school operations and programs.”

Musk opened his first nonprofit school in Hawthorne, California, in 2014. Named “Ad Astra” – Latin for “to the stars”– it served to educate his own children and the children of SpaceX employees. A decade later, it became the blueprint for his newest educational endeavor: an Ad Astra elementary school stationed near SpaceX’s facility in Bastrop, Texas. Plans for the new Ad Astra school included a STEM-heavy curriculum and Montessori-style teaching. But recent documents from the Texas Health and Human Services state agency, reported by The New York Times, reveal that the facility has strayed from this initial goal and now operates as a “licensed childcare program” for ten children. Musk has not publicly shared any news since 2023 about his plans to open a university.

The Musk Foundation’s second-largest donation, totaling $35 million, may not have gone to charity at all yet. That’s because Musk funneled the money into a donor-advised fund (DAF) at Fidelity Charitable – essentially a bank account for philanthropy that allows money to be stashed for future donations, with no requirement to ever pay it out. Contributors to DAFs can benefit from a tax break before distributing the money to actual charities, and are not required to disclose how much they’re giving and to whom. A representative for Musk did not respond to Forbes’ request for comment on the status of the funds held in the Fidelity Charitable DAF account.

The foundation sent its third-largest grant, of over $7 million, to Baylor Scott & White Healthcare, the largest non-profit healthcare system in Texas, which operates a massive network of hospitals, patient care sites and the Baylor Scott & White Health Plan insurance company.

Musk also doled out smaller gifts to other nonprofits, mostly focused on supporting health and education initiatives, and natural disaster relief. Among the new recipients this year are two Jewish entities, the Holocaust Museum in LA and the European Jewish Association. Musk was accused in early 2024 of espousing antisemitic views in a post on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter – a claim he repeatedly tried to denounce with visits to Israel and the Holocaust death camp Auschwitz.

In all, the Musk Foundation has doled out more than $1.1 billion since 2010. It’s still sitting on assets of $14.7 billion, much of it likely in Tesla stock.
