CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that the company will eliminate the one-time “lifetime” purchase option for Full Self-Driving (FSD) and transition entirely to a subscription-based model, a move that is already generating intense discussion among Tesla fans, critics, and industry analysts.
Lifetime FSD Ends After February 14, 2026
According to Elon Musk, Tesla will stop selling FSD as a one-time $8,000 upgrade after February 14, 2026. From that point forward, new Tesla buyers will no longer be able to permanently own FSD. Instead, access to the system will require an active monthly subscription, with the $99/month plan becoming the primary way to use FSD.
Once the subscription is canceled, FSD functionality will be disabled—marking a fundamental shift in how Tesla customers interact with one of the brand’s most talked-about features.
Tesla’s Push Toward Recurring Software Revenue
