Since The Bachelor first aired in 2002, less than 10 couples wed, about 27 found love, some started families, and hundreds of singles shed buckets of tears.
Unfortunately for Jenn Tran, her journey with Devin Strader on season 21 of The Bachelorette turned out to be thorny. Since her shocking split was revealed on the show’s finale on September 3, the 26-year-old says “I hate men.”

The final rose ceremony of The Bachelorette took a dramatic turn when Jenn Tran, 26 presented Devin Strader with a seashell and said, “I’ve decided to choose myself in this journey.”“You were always a constant, our love was always there, and I never doubted for a second how much you loved me…I love you so deeply, Devin, but I can’t let you propose to me,” Tran said as she gave Devin, 28, a seashell with a wedding band.
The New Jersey born woman then proposed with a wedding band in a seashell. “Absolutely,” he said, “A hundred times over.”
Before sharing a passionate embrace, Devin also proposed: “Will you make me the happiest man and marry me?”
‘Bold proclamations of love’
But things took an awful turn after Tran left Hawaii and she was flooded with doubt.
“It’s been a really hard couple of months,” Tran said on After the Final Rose, which aired September 3. “We had left Hawaii engaged, it was the happiest day of my life. I thought I had found who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.”
Next, she explains that Strader’s efforts were inconsistent and that he wasn’t calling as much, “All the promises he had made to me of wanting to move somewhere together and wanting to have this future planned out.”
The heartbroken woman said that the couple planned to see a counsellor in August but the night before their session, Strader broke off the engagement.
“He had basically said that he didn’t love me anymore and didn’t feel the same way and he felt like things were off the second he proposed,” she said. “He was making bold proclamations of love. Then suddenly the next day it was nothing.”
Heartbreaker
Coming face to face with the man who ripped out her heart, the physician’s assistant confronted Strader about how he ended their engagement over a phone call.
Responding, Strader starts, “When we left the show, I had a lot of doubts.” He then insists “I did come clean to you about that.” He adds that he “hid all these feelings of doubt” and “was regretfully late” in letting her know and “can only sit here and take accountability.”
Tran then accused Devin of having “one foot out the door the entire time,” and reveals, “I am heartbroken every Monday night watching the lies you said to me on TV.”
Defending himself, Strader says “I have nothing to gain by being here other than to make sure that you’re okay, which is what I came here to do.”
‘Love sick’
Weighing in on the emotional moment, fans argued that Tran should have chosen Missouri’s Jonathon Johnson, a fan favorite who was eliminated in week 8.
“You know who wouldn’t have broke off an engagement and claim he never loved you?” tweets one user in a post that includes a photo of Johnson, the handsome 27-year-old who made his entrance by telling Tran, “I’m love sick.”
“You know who wouldn’t be hurting Jenn right now?” shares a second.
“He was the right choice…no doubt,” adds a third netizen, while another shares, “Undisputed choice. Undoubtedly.”
‘Weren’t in love’
That door however is no longer open.
Speaking with Deadline, Johnson reveals he has all “the closure” he needs.
“There had to have been a reason that we couldn’t get there. Maybe we’re just really good friends. We’re also attracted to each other, but we weren’t in love with each other, and seeing the relationship she had with those other two was the closure I needed to be like, it just wasn’t as strong for the two of us, and that’s okay.”
Johnson is soon heading off to Mexico to appear in the franchise spinoff series, Bachelor in Paradise, which airs in 2025.
As for Tran, in an interview with People, she says, “I’m still very much going through a healing process.” The woman – who will appear alongside Sasha Farber on season 33 of Dancing with the Stars– then jokes, “Right now, I hate men, so…”
