The Window Washer in Our Apartment Building Left a Note That Saved Me

Rebecca expects her routine when she gets home. However, the window washer leaves a cryptic note that suggests her fiancé is hiding secrets.

She gets a chill when she thinks her beautiful existence may be a lie. Will Rebecca discover unpleasant facts about the man she knew?

I came into the living room, experiencing cool air from a young man cleaning the windows. He looked strange out there with his equipment, like he was inside our world yet outside. Kissing Daniel on the cheek, I tried not to feel self-conscious.

I saw the washer freeze like he saw a ghost as he stared our direction. But he instantly looked away.

“Hey, love,” I smiled at Daniel.

Daniel said, “Hey, Rebecca,” hugging me before going to the gym. “See you later.”

“See you,” I murmured, watching him go.

I refocused on the window washer. He worked hard and focused. He stared inside someone’s house—why? Creep! I heard this in my head. I shrugged and cleaned the apartment.

The washer finishing the last window broke the room’s stillness. I saw him writing on the soapy glass.

I approached to read his writing out of curiosity. The message “Look under your carpet.” opened my eyes.

I quickly flipped the carpet in the main room. I almost fainted when I spotted women’s underwear underneath. My mind was full of queries. These belonged to whom? They were here why?

It all made clear now. The cleaner was speaking to me.

Ran to the window and opened it. Excuse me! Calling out. “What’s going on?”

He looked up from his tools, serious. “You found it, didn’t you?”

I answered, “Yes, I did,” holding out the panties. What’s it about?

“I’m Harry,” he said, halting to approach the window. “I saw your fiancé with another woman. After seeing me clean the windows, the woman fled quickly. You fiancé buried her underpants under the carpet.”

Heart plummeted. What I heard was unbelievable. Are you sure? I shakily asked. How do you know?

“Yes, I’m sure,” Harry said. I saw it firsthand. Your ring made me think you were engaged. I’m sorry you learned this way.”

“I’m Rebecca,” I said, attempting to speak clearly. “Thanks, Harry. I like your candor.”

“You’re welcome,” he added, appearing worried.

I gave him a large gratuity from my pocket. “This is for your help,” I said. “Keep this between us.”

Harry nodded and resumed work, leaving me to think. Standing there with the undergarments, I felt angry and betrayed.

A plan was needed. I couldn’t ignore this. Daniel suffered for his conduct. With my mind racing, I sat down and considered my options. Instantly, it hit me.

I sprang up and ran to the window. Harry was thankfully present. Harry, wait! Can I have your number? Calling out. He looked up, astonished, then nodded and gave me his business card through the window.

“Thanks,” I responded, feeling more in control. I knew I couldn’t leave the wedding my father was paying for empty-handed. I had to make Daniel pay for the wedding and his actions.

I sat on my bed in my bedroom and breathed deeply.

A few hours later, I called Harry thinking he would answer. His response came on the second ring.

Hello, Harry? My name is Rebecca. I need your help,” I said, trying to speak clearly.

Of course, Rebecca. You need what? Harry said.

“Please return on Saturday to ‘redo the windows.’ I outlined my plan.

“Sure, I can do that,” Harry responded confidently.

“Thanks, Harry. This is important to me,” I said, relieved.

“No problem, Rebecca. I’ll attend, he said.

I became determined after hanging up. I couldn’t let Daniel off the hook. Protecting my father’s investment and teaching Daniel a lesson for cheating were my goals.

I plotted my strategy. Saturday, everything was ready.

That morning, I promised Daniel I’d be gone all day. I said, “I have some errands to run,” seeming nonchalant.

Daniel said, “Alright, see you later,” scarcely looking up from his phone.

I briefly exited the apartment. I parked and waited a few blocks away.

Harry was waiting outside the window as promised. He had his camera ready. He would help me find Daniel’s cheating evidence.

I watched him secretly photograph my fiancé’s infidelity from afar. My heart raced, but I had to concentrate.

Harry messaged me hours later. “Photos ready. Send them now.”

Picture transmission buzzed my phone. Each validated my suspicions, but seeing it hurt my heart.

There they were… Daniel and the other woman laughing and holding in our living room. Pictures showed them kissing and going to Daniel and my bedroom.

Another photo showed them snuggling on our couch, where Daniel and I used to discuss our future. Every frame showed treachery.

Final buzz on my phone. “She’s leaving now,” Harry wrote.

I drove back to the apartment with the images, inhaling. Daniel sat on the couch looking pleased when I entered.

“Hey, you’re back early,” he replied, sounding surprised.

“I know everything,” I said, brandishing my phone. “Someone stole these today!”

Daniel paled. Rebecca, I can explain…

I interrupted him, “There’s nothing to explain.” You betrayed me! Now, pay back my father’s wedding fees or I’ll release these images!”

Daniel’s eyes widened in terror. Do not do this, Rebecca. I’ll repay you, but don’t tell anyone.”

“Fine,” I answered coldly. Please send the money by the end of the week!

Daniel nodded in defeat. I was relieved and sad.

This wasn’t my ideal ending, but I had to protect my family and myself.

I left Daniel’s place with my stuff. While leaving, I knew I had made the proper option. Daniel had to pay for his crimes, and I was finally in charge.

I canceled the wedding after Daniel deposited the money days later. I posted on Facebook:

I have a big announcement for my friends and family! 🚨 My wedding and relationship with Daniel are off. Unfortunately, honesty isn’t everyone’s forte. 🙄 Recent occurrences have told me this partnership lacks trust. I appreciate your patience and support during this tumultuous voyage! #SingleAndStronger #BetterOff

Responses to the post were fast and overwhelming. Support and understanding came from friends and family. Though agonizing, I knew it was correct.

I found peace in my new abode a few weeks later. I had overcome the betrayal and was ready to start over. I visited Harry at a nearby café to thank him for his support.

“Harry, I can’t thank you enough,” I said, beaming. “Your help prevented my biggest mistake.”

I’m pleased I helped, Rebecca. You deserve happiness and respect, he said.

“Thank you. I appreciate your help, I said, feeling lighter. A new beginning is needed.

We talked, and I realized how much I had learned. I was stronger, wiser, and ready for anything.

Walking back to my new flat, I felt hopeful. I took charge of my life and moved on from the past. A new and exciting chapter was beginning, and I was ready to embrace it.
