4-month-old girl died after her mother’s shelter friend became frustrated because he couldn’t make the baby stop crying

Utah – In a disturbing incident in Utah, a man has been arrested and charged with the first-degree murder of a four-month-old girl he was babysitting.

The tragic event has shaken the community and sparked a conversation about child safety and caregiver responsibility.

On August 25, a 28-year-old man, identified as Z. Walton, was trusted with the care of a little girl while her mother was at work. Walton, a resident of a shelter and a friend to the mother, had previously taken care of the child without incident.

However, on this fateful day, something went terribly wrong. According to the DA’s office, frustration led Walton to commit an act of unthinkable violence against the infant.

As per the reports, the baby, referred to as S.S. in court documents, had been sleeping for most of the day but became inconsolable in the afternoon, continuously crying. Walton, in an attempt to calm her, took her to the roof of the shelter, believing the fresh air might soothe her. However, the situation escalated in the elevator on their way to the roof. Initially, Walton told detectives from the police department that he had “accidentally bumped” the baby’s head against the elevator wall. Upon further questioning, he admitted that, out of frustration, he had used significant force to slam her head against the elevator’s wall.

The aftermath of the assault was grim. Video surveillance captured Walton on the roof, carrying the limp infant and attempting to revive her by blowing into her face. He eventually sought help, and emergency responders rushed the baby to the hospital. Medical examinations revealed multiple skull fractures, brain bleeding, and older healing rib fractures, which Walton attributed to hugging the baby too tightly out of excitement. Despite the efforts to save her, the baby was taken off life support and succumbed to her injuries.

Walton faces charges of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse. He remains in custody in jail without bond. The case has prompted District Attorney S. Gill to remind caregivers of the importance of seeking help if they feel overwhelmed. “If you are struggling to give the proper care for children that you are responsible for, please ask for help. This infant death is a tragedy that could have been avoided. We are committed to seeking justice and accountability for this young child and her family,” Gill stated.

The incident has left the community and the family grieving and searching for answers. How a caregiver’s frustration turned deadly is a stark reminder of the fragility of young lives and the grave responsibilities of those entrusted with their care. As the legal proceedings against Walton continue, many are calling for increased awareness and resources for struggling caregivers to prevent such tragedies in the future.
