Indiana – In a harrowing case in Indiana, a 28-year-old man, identified as K. Lawson, is facing severe legal repercussions after his 3-month-old daughter suffered life-threatening injuries under his care.

Lawson has been charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, reflecting the gravity of the accusations against him.

The situation unfolded on July 13, when Lawson urgently called 911 to report that his infant daughter was unresponsive.

The seriousness of the call prompted immediate medical attention, and the baby was quickly transported to a local hospital. Given the severity of her injuries, she was airlifted to a children’s hospital for specialized care.

At the hospital, the medical team discovered that the infant had sustained a disturbing array of injuries. According to reports, she had 18 rib fractures in various stages of healing, a fractured left leg, a fractured finger on her left hand, blood collecting outside her brain on both sides of her head, and additional blood found in three spots on her spine. A medical report cited by police diagnosed the child’s injuries as indicative of abusive head trauma, stating that she had been subjected to multiple instances of physical abuse over the weeks leading to her near-fatal condition.

During the investigation, Lawson’s statements to medical professionals and law enforcement were inconsistent and sometimes incriminating. He reportedly told doctors, “Maybe I shook her, I don’t really know,” signaling uncertainty about his actions. However, the child’s mother did not directly accuse Lawson but suggested that his comments seemed apologetic and implied responsibility for the injuries.

Further complicating the case, Lawson’s text messages painted a picture of a man grappling with the consequences of his actions. He texted the child’s mother and other family members, expressing regret and a lack of recall for the events leading to the emergency call. Surveillance footage obtained during the investigation showed Lawson shaking the infant, flipping her over by one of her legs, and handling her in a manner consistent with the injuries she sustained.

A doctor from the children’s hospital, after reviewing the surveillance footage, affirmed that the actions observed were the type of abusive behavior that could lead to the near-fatal event experienced by the infant. This professional opinion bolstered the charges against Lawson, who also mentioned experiencing “time blindness,” a symptom he attributed to his ADHD, which he claimed caused periods of blackouts during stressful times.

As of now, Lawson has been granted a $50,005 surety bond and awaits his next court appearance on October 16. The legal proceedings will likely delve deeper into the nature of the injuries and Lawson’s capacity for causing such harm.
